Refusal of the Call in The Hobbit:

Refusal of the Call:

The refusal of the call is in the ordinary world and is where the main character refuses to take part of an adventure or quest. He/she might not join for many different reasons such as trepidation of the crisis or the tests they must face. However they will soon undertake the quest and depart on the adventure. A refusal of the quest only brings trouble.

The refusal of the call was clear in our story as Bilbo repudiated to go on the adventure straight after Gandalf asked him to go on it. Bilbo responded to Gandalf by saying, “Sorry! I don’t want any adventures, thank you. Not today. Good morning! But please come to tea- anytime you like! Why not tomorrow? Come tomorrow! Good bye!” (Tolkien 14). Bilbo did not seem entranced in any adventures or quests and tried to politely ask Gandalf to leave. The motive for not accepting the adventure is that he is a hobbit and it is not from their nature to go on adventures because they aren’t fit enough.
