Status Quo:

The status quo, or the ordinary world, is when the main character is introduced to the audience. It is when the character, environment, and background are described. It also introduces the characters life and it’s a build up to the start of his journey. In the monomyth the definition of the ordinary world is: Heroes exist in a world where he is thought to be uneventful by those who live there. Often the heroes are considered odd by those in the ordinary world and possess some ability or characteristic that makes feel out of place.

Status Quo in The Hobbit:

In the book The Hobbit Bilbo is a regular hobbit living in his nice cozy hobbit. J.R.R. Tolkien began the book by describing Bilbo, which is our main character, and his hobbit hole. The book quoted “They are inclined to be at in the stomach; they dress in bright colors (chiefly green and yellow); wear no shoes, because their feet grow natural leathery soles and thick warm brown hair like the stuff on their heads (which is curly); have long clever brown fingers, good-natured faces, and laugh deep fruity laughs (especially after dinner, which they have twice a day when they can get it).”(Tolkien 13). This means that describing the main character is a very vital part in the beginning of the book because like said before, it makes you understand the story so when the journey starts its easier for you to follow along. Bilbo, unlike most hobbits, didn't like any adventures at all. His family, Baggins, is known for not being part of any adventures. This also shows that he was different, which made him feel out of place where he lived.
